New Work: Landscapes of Berkelland 2025

For: Eibergen Musuem, Exhibition June-October 2025
In my newest ceramic series, I’ve been exploring the abstract landscapes of Berkelland—translating the textures, stories, and quiet poetry of this place into form.

Using a square extruder shape I had custom-made for my studio, I shape clay into layered, shifting planes—echoes of land, sky, and horizon. The clay itself carries the weight of this place: I’ve mixed in local soil, created ash glazes from native plants, and incorporated oxides and metals to let the materials speak their own language.

This work is deeply personal.
Berkelland is the first place I’ve lived in the Netherlands where I’ve truly felt I could make a home. After moving from South Africa, it was here that I began to reconnect with nature, with a sense of belonging, and with an open, welcoming community. This land offered not only inspiration—but grounding.

This series is about that connection. About presence. About remembering that where we come from and where we choose to stay both shape us—and that working with the earth can still surprise, inspire, and challenge us every day.

It’s also a reminder that for me, teaching and creating are inseparable. Every workshop, every conversation, every lump of clay passed from one hand to another carries a spark. These pieces are part of my ongoing journey—as an artist, a teacher, and someone who has chosen to root themselves in a new landscape.
